2024 U.S. Election: The Choice is Obvious

José M. Zuniga

Endorsing Kamala Harris for President of the United States over Donald Trump is not simply a matter of political alignment; it is a decision grounded in a commitment to human rights, health equity, and the overall well-being of the nation. While both candidates have occupied prominent positions in American politics, their records on issues that directly impact public health and social determinants of health differ significantly. This endorsement of Kamala Harris is based on her demonstrated commitment to these critical areas, as well as a strong contrast with Donald Trump’s record, which has often been at odds with the values of health equity and human rights.

Commitment to Human Rights

Kamala Harris’s career has been marked by a consistent focus on protecting and advancing human rights. From her early days as a prosecutor to her time as a U.S. Senator and Vice President, Harris has been a staunch advocate for vulnerable populations, including immigrants, women, and communities of color. Her work to address the rights of immigrants, particularly in advocating for Dreamers and pushing for comprehensive immigration reform, underscores her belief in the dignity and worth of every person. Harris has also been vocal about the need to protect reproductive rights, recognizing that access to healthcare, including reproductive health services, is a fundamental human right.

In contrast, Donald Trump’s record on human rights has been marked by policies and rhetoric that have often undermined these principles. His administration’s policies on immigration, including the separation of families at the border, were human rights violations. Additionally, his approach to issues like LGBTQ+ rights and women’s rights has often been regressive, rolling back protections and undermining the progress that had been made in these areas. Trump’s disregard for these fundamental human rights is a stark contrast to Harris’s commitment to upholding them.

Advancing Health Equity

Health equity is a critical issue that has gained prominence, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kamala Harris has a strong track record of addressing health disparities and working to ensure that all Americans, regardless of race, income, or geography, have access to quality healthcare. As a Senator, Harris introduced legislation aimed at reducing maternal mortality rates among Black women, who are disproportionately affected by this issue. She has also advocated for expanding access to mental health services and addressing the social determinants of health that contribute to disparities in health outcomes.

Harris’s focus on health equity is particularly important in the context of the broader social determinants of health, which include factors like education, income, housing, and environmental conditions. She has recognized that improving public health requires a holistic approach that addresses these underlying factors. This is evident in her support for policies that aim to reduce poverty, improve access to education, and ensure safe and affordable housing for all Americans.

Donald Trump’s approach to health equity, on the other hand, has been less consistent and often counterproductive. His administration’s efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would have stripped millions of Americans of their health insurance, disproportionately affecting low-income individuals and communities of color. While Trump did sign the Right to Try Act, which allows terminally ill patients to access experimental treatments, this policy alone does not address the broader issues of access to care and health equity. Additionally, Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which included downplaying the virus and promoting misinformation, exacerbated health disparities, particularly among marginalized communities.

Public Health Leadership

Public health leadership is another area where Kamala Harris has demonstrated a clear and consistent commitment, particularly in her response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Harris has advocated science-based approaches to public health challenges, supporting measures such as widespread testing, contact tracing, and vaccine distribution to combat the virus. She has also emphasized the importance of addressing the economic impacts of the pandemic, recognizing that economic stability is a key determinant of health.

In contrast, Donald Trump’s public health record, especially during the pandemic, lacked coordination, disregarded scientific advice, and prioritized political considerations over public health. His administration’s response to the pandemic was marked by mixed messages, a lack of clear guidance, and an undermining of public health institutions like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This approach not only failed to effectively control the spread of the virus but also contributed to a deepening of public mistrust in health authorities.

An Obvious Choice

In the context of human rights, health equity, and public health, Kamala Harris is the clear choice for President of the United States. Her record demonstrates a deep commitment to protecting vulnerable populations, advancing health equity, and leading with a science-based approach to public health challenges. In contrast, Donald Trump’s record on these issues has often undermined progress and exacerbated disparities. Electing Kamala Harris as President is a choice to prioritize the health and well-being of all Americans, ensuring a more just and equitable future for the nation.

Embracing the Power of Love: A Skeptic’s Journey towards Public Health Transformation

José M. Zuniga

As an empiricist grounded in data and evidence, I once approached the concept of love with skepticism, particularly regarding its application within initiatives aimed at achieving the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Love seemed too abstract, too nebulous to be a tangible force for enacting change at the policy, financial, or intervention levels. However, I have come to recognize the profound impact that love can have in augmenting and supporting public health efforts.

At first glance, the notion of incorporating love into public health strategies may appear idealistic or impractical. After all, how can something as intangible and subjective as love contribute meaningfully to the complex challenges of global health equity, disease prevention, and healthcare accessibility? Yet, having witnessed love in action over the years, notably among communities supporting each other in relation to HIV, it becomes clear that love possesses inherent qualities that make it a potent catalyst for positive change.

Love, in its essence, encompasses empathy, compassion, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others. It transcends boundaries of nationality, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and political ideology, making it a universal force capable of fostering solidarity and cooperation among diverse communities. In the realm of public health, these qualities of love can serve as powerful drivers for mobilizing resources, galvanizing support, and inspiring collective action towards achieving common health objectives.

One of the key pillars of the SDGs is the commitment to leaving no one behind, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their circumstances, have access to essential health services and opportunities for well-being. Love, with its inclusive and egalitarian nature, aligns closely with this principle, advocating for the rights and dignity of every person, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized populations. By infusing public health policies and interventions with a sense of love and compassion, we can prioritize the needs of those who are often overlooked or neglected, thereby advancing the overarching goal of health equity.

Moreover, love has the remarkable ability to foster resilience and empower individuals and communities to overcome adversity and achieve sustainable health outcomes. In the face of daunting challenges such as infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters, or socioeconomic disparities, love serves as a source of strength, solidarity, and hope. It fuels resilience by nurturing social connections, promoting mutual support networks, and instilling a sense of belonging and purpose. By harnessing the power of love, public health efforts can cultivate environments that are conducive to collective well-being and sustainable development.

Furthermore, love extends beyond the realm of interpersonal relationships to encompass broader systems-level changes that are necessary for achieving the health-related SDGs. This includes fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and transparency within governments, institutions, and civil society organizations. Love encourages dialogue, consensus-building, and mutual respect, facilitating the development of inclusive policies and strategies that address the root causes of health inequities and promote holistic approaches to health and wellness.

In practical terms, embracing the power of love within public health requires a paradigm shift in how we conceptualize and prioritize our efforts. It involves moving away from purely transactional or technocratic approaches towards more human-centered and empathetic models of engagement. This may entail integrating community-led initiatives, participatory decision-making processes, and culturally sensitive interventions that honor the inherent dignity and agency of individuals and communities.

Additionally, investing in love-driven public health strategies can yield significant returns on investment, both in terms of tangible health outcomes and broader societal benefits. Research has shown that supportive social relationships and a sense of belonging are associated with improved mental health, resilience, and overall well-being. By nurturing environments of love and compassion, we can create conditions that promote health at the individual, community, and population levels, leading to greater productivity, social cohesion, and economic prosperity.

While I could not have predicted this shift in thinking a decade ago, as an empiricist once skeptical about the role of love in public health who is pondering how we can gain momentum towards attaining the health-related SDGs when therapeutics and preventative agents are not enough, I have come to recognize its transformative potential in augmenting and supporting efforts to achieve the health-related SDGs. Love, with its universal appeal and inherent qualities of empathy, compassion, and solidarity, has the power to inspire meaningful change at all levels of society. By embracing love as a guiding principle in our public health endeavors, we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and flourish, leaving no one behind in our pursuit of health and well-being for all.

A World Reborn

José M. Zuniga

In a world where love prevails,
Where kindness blooms in every heart,
And hatred finds no place to dwell,
Peace is the pulse of every start.

Children laugh in fields of green,
No fear of bombs or whispered threats,
Their dreams bright, their futures seen,
No lives to mourn, no deep regrets.

In every land, the rights of all
Are honored like the morning sun,
No chains to bind, no walls to stall,
Freedom belongs to everyone.

Hands reach out, not in disdain,
But to lift up those who fall,
No borders built to breed disdain,
Just bridges wide to welcome all.

The whispers of the past remain,
A ghostly echo, faint and far,
But in this world, no grief, no pain,
Just love that shines like every star.

In every home, the light is warm,
The hearth is kind, the table full,
No war to sound its cold alarm,
Just peace that flows, serene and cool.

Oh, vision bright, oh dream so true,
Where every soul finds their embrace,
In this world, born anew,
We live in love, in light, in grace.

“The status quo is not our destiny; it is merely a reflection of what we have accepted so far. To create a world that truly benefits all people and the planet, we must shatter the limits of what is and relentlessly pursue what should be, driven by a vision of justice, equity, and sustainability.”
